Your carbon footprint
This is the international standard to measure green house gas emissions. The green house gas emission comes from the use of fossil fuels in traffic, aviation, transport, production of goods and materials, wood, construction of roads, buildings and services. Green house gases are gases that absorb and emit infrared radiation. The following gases are in abundance in earth’s atmosphere.
- Water vapor H2O
- Carbon dioxide CO2
- Methane CH4
- Nitrous Oxide N2O
- Ozone O3
These greenhouse gases have a significant effect on the temperature of the earth. Without the natural greenhouse gas the temperature on earth would be -18 degrees Celsius.
However, since the industrial revolution, there have come far more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere which affects the natural balance. This disturbance causes the earth to slowly getting warmer. It is projected that by the year 2100, the temperature will be 2 degrees higher compared to now. To undo this disturbance and return to the natural greenhouse gas balance, measures need to be taken.
One of the measures that are taken by the state is the obligation that companies must measure and reduce CO2. Currently is only applied to the heavy industry, but the developments have also affected other markets. Markets that, until now, had little or nothing to do with this issue. It is expected that in the future other companies will be faced with obligations to achieve further reductions.
At present there is already a major supermarket chain in France that mentions the CO2 emissions on the receipt of all groceries that have been purchased. Sustainable produced and transported products will become increasingly more important in the future as consumers are more and more aware of sustainability and carbon footprint.
